Holden Caulfield
Holden Caulfield is the narrator throughout the story as well as the protagonist. Holden is a teenager fighting against the changes and challenges of facing adulthood. His appearance, very tall and his somewhat grey hair, contradicts his way of acting like a teenager rather than a soon to be adult. His goal in life is to be a catcher in the rye and to protect children from change and losing their innocence when growing up, especially his little sister Phoebe. He is always failing his classes, but he is actually very smart and only shows it when he feels like it. He wants nothing more than to live in a world of no change, where no one grows up, and where everyone is innocent.

Phoebe Caulfield

Phoebe is the younger ten year old sister of Holden, who he constantly glorifies throughout the book. She is extremely smart and clever for her young age, much like her older brother. She may be smart, but she is still a child. She has spurts of adult like moments mixed in with her normal childish feelings. She cares for her older brother to the point that she is willing to run away with him. She is the reason that Holden realizes that he can not be the catcher in the rye during the resolution of the book.

Allie Caulfield

Allie is the younger brother of Holden. He died of leukemia when he was only eleven. He is a huge motivator of Holden even though he is not alive. He played baseball when he was little, and loved to write poems, mostly on his glove with a green pen. Holden looks up to his little brother because he was able to achieve Holden's dream to stay innocent forever. Since he died at such a young age, he remained innocent for eternity, something Holden wants most in the world.
